Charles Cantalupo has published a number of collections of poetry including his latest volume, Anima/l Wo/man and Other Spirits published by Spectacular Diseases. His poems have appeared in, among other journals and magazines, Angel Exhaust, apex of the M, Arras, Sulfur, and Talisman. He has translated the work of many African writers including the poets, Frank Chipasula, Gitahi Gititi, and Tanure Ojaide. His critical books include The World of Ngugi wa Thiong'o and Ngugi wa Thiong'o: Texts and Contexts, Poetry, Mysticism and Feminism: 'from the nave to th' chops' and A Literary Leviathan: Thomas Hobbes's Masterpiece of Language.

He has published essays on subjects ranging from modern and postmodern poetry and Renaissance to African literature. He has recently readings performed his work at Asmara's Alliance Francaise, at the Canessa Park Art Gallery in San Francisco, at the Sub Voicive and The Africa Centre in London, for SUNY Buffalo's Poetics Program, at the Malawi Literary Festival and here in New York at the Ear Inn. He is Conference Co-Chair of "Against All Odds: African Languages and Literatures into the 21st Century", to be held in Asmara, Eritrea in 1999. Professor of English at Penn State, he is married with four children and lives in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, 200 yards north of the grave of H.D.
